Indian batter Shreyas Iyer was snubbed from the Asia Cup squad that was announced on August 19 by the BCCI selection committee. While Iyer was not picked, Shubman Gill made a return to India’s T20I side and even was named the vice-captain.
Iyer did not find a place despite of being consistent in the format. His led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024, apart from leading Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title.
In 2025, he led Punjab Kings to their first IPL final in a decade, besides scoring 604 runs at a strike-rate of 175.07. Iyer became the first captain in the IPL to take two different teams into the final of the IPL.

Dont Know What Else Shreyas has To Do - Santosh Iyer
After his snub, Shreyas Iyer’s father expressed his disappointment over the team selection call. He further urged the BCCI to consider him for selection in the format.
“I don’t know what else Shreyas has to do to make it to the Indian T20 team. He has been performing so well in the IPL year after year, from Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riders to Punjab Kings, and that too as a captain” Santosh Iyer told The Times of India.
"He even captained KKR to the IPL title in 2024 and led PBKS to the final this year. I’m not saying make him the Indian captain, but at least select him in the team," he further said.
Santosh Iyer further said that while his son does not blame anyone for not being picked, deep down he knows that he is disappointed.
“However, let me tell you that even if he’s left out of the Indian team, he doesn’t show dissent on his face. He’ll just say: ‘Mera naseeb hai (it’s my luck)! You can’t do anything now.’ He’s always cool and calm. He doesn’t blame anybody. Deep inside, he must be naturally disappointed," he said.
