Steve Smith retired from ODI cricket immediately after Australia's loss to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final in Dubai on Tuesday. The loss put them out of the tournament.
India beat Australia by four wickets as they chased down 265 required to win. The Men In Blue won the match in the 49th over and won the match convincingly and became the first team to qualify for the Champions Trophy final.
After Australia's loss, Smith informed of his decision to retire from ODI cricket. However, he confirmed that he will play Tests and T20I cricket. The 35-year-old made his ODI debut in 2010 against the West Indies. He ended his career, featuring in 170 ODIs, scoring 5,800 runs, the 12th highest for Australia. He hammered 35 fifties and 12 hundreds. He also won two ODIs World Cups with Australia in 2015 and 2023 and will retire as one of the team's top ODI players. 105 vs India in 2015 ODI World Cup Semi-Final
Steve Smith scored 12 ODI centuries and scored five of them against India. His very first ODI ton against India was in the 2015 ODI World Cup semi-final. His century took Australia to 328/7 in the knockout game in Sydney. India in response were bowled out for 233 as they lost the match by 95 runs and were knocked out of the tournament. In his final ODI innings, he scored 73 off 96 in the Champions Trophy semi-final that came in a losing cause.
149 vs India in 2016
149 remains his second-highest ODI score and one of his five centuries against India. Batting first, India scored 309/3 with Rohit Sharma scoring an unbeaten 171 and Virat Kohli 91 off 97 deliveries. Smith's counter-attacking century in the chase ensured Australia's win in the final over by five wickets in the final over of the match.
164 vs New Zealand in 2016
164 remains his highest ODI score. This was his seventh ODI ton which came in 2016. He hit 14 fours and four sixes in his knock that came batting first. Australia scored 324/8. The Kiwis in response to 325 were bowled out for 256. Smith was scoring these runs and these centuries in the ODI format when he was placed along the Fab 4 alongside Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Joe Root and Smith himself.

This remains Smith's only century in ODI cricket against England. The knock came in a winning cause with the Aussies chasing 304 to win won the match of the penultimate delivery of their innings. He bettered Ian Bell's 141 as he anchored the chase brilliantly took his team to a memorable win. He scored five off six balls in his final ODI innings in the Champions Trophy 2025.
108 vs South Africa, 2016
This was another of his centuries that came in a losing cause but showed the player that he is. He scored 108 and David Warner's 117 took the Aussies to 371/6 in 50 overs. Smith batted at number three and was dismissed by Dale Steyn in the match. South Africa won the match courtesy of David Miller's unbeaten 118 batting at number six. The century came from Smith during his career when he was just about starting to bat well in ODI cricket.
