Team India welcomed a new era of Test cricket as Shubman Gill's young Indian team are set to challenge England in their own backyard. The Test series kicks off a new World Test Championship cycle for both teams.
Meanwhile, for Gill, it is his first series since being named India's full-time Test skipper. The young Indian team is ready to usher in a new era with their veterans Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin all retired from Test cricket.
Rohit and Kohli announced their Test retirements last month, while Ashwin announced his Test retirement during the Australia series. Without the heavyweights, it is certainly going to be challenging for the new and young Indian team to cope up in England.
Woke Up With Mixed Feelings - Prithi Narayanan
Meanwhile, Prithi Narayanan, R Ashwin's wife posted a story on her official Instagram account. The message she wrote might have divided opinions and a few partial comments as well.
"Test match day for India, and I woke up with many mixed feelings. Have to find a different way to love it and unlearn the only way I knew to," Prithi Narayanan wrote on Instagram Stories.
Her message was about the likes of Kohli, Rohit and Ashwin not being a part of an Indian Test team after over a decade. In the last decade before this Test match, India never played a Test match without the three of them included in the XI. This is the implication of the Instagram story she shared on her social media account.
In fact, the last time India played a Test match without Kohli, Rohit and Ashwin was back in 2011 in the Test series against England. Incidentally, it is once again in England after almost 15 years that India is playing a Test match without the trio.
India 92/2 At Lunch
Meanwhile, the England vs India Test match at Headingly is already underway with the first session done and dusted. India have scored 92 runs for the loss of two wickets. Yashasvi Jaiswal is unbeaten on 42 runs from 74 balls. KL Rahul scored 42 runs off 78. Just 15 minutes before the lunch break, England struck twice in quick succession with Brydon Carse removing Rahul and Ben Stokes dismissing Sai Sudharsan for a duck on his debut. Shubman Gill will walk out at four post the lunch break.
