Farokh Engineer slams ECB for removing Pataudi name from trophy

Former Indian wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer is upset and disappointed with the England Cricket Board (ECB) for removing the name of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi from the series trophy.

The board then decided to award the Pataudi Trophy to the winning captain of the Test series, which as per Engineer, was a gimmick from the British Cricket Board.

He slammed the ECB for disregarding the legacy of the former Indian captain by removing his name from the trophy. He further said that the Pataudi Medal feels like a last-minute revival to limit the controversy surrounding the incident.

Hope That Pataudi Name Always Remains - Farokh Engineer

The England vs India Test series was renamed as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. However, Farokh Engineer admitted that he was disappointed with Pataudi's name being removed from the trophy.

“I was very disappointed that the Pataudi name was removed,” Engineer said as quoted by PTI.

The former Indian wicketkeeper further said that the Pataudi Medal for the winning captain was an afterthought.

“It was obviously an afterthought. They should have announced it in the beginning. That would’ve had more credibility. But at least they’ve done something. Common sense has prevailed and I hope the Pataudi name always remains" Engineer said.

He further asked the ECB to invite Sharmila Tagore and Saif Ali Khan to present the Pataudi Medal to the winning captain.

"The whole issue is debatable but they have kept the name. I hope they invite Sharmila Tagore (Mansur's wife) and his son Saif Ali Khan to present the medal. The last series they didn’t do that. Fingers were pointed at the ECB. Hopefully this time they give them due credit,” he added.
