West Indies vs Australia: Marnus Labuschagne Axed as Sam Konstas and Jos Inglis Make Playing XI

Summary

Australia drop Labuschagne, Smith ruled out injured; Inglis and Konstas named in playing XI for West Indies Test.

Marnus Labushagne dropped from Australia team

Australia names their batting line-up for the West Indies Test as Marnus Labuschagne gets dropped and Steve Smith is ruled out due to injury, making way for Josh Inglis and Sam Konstas in the playing XI. The first Test begins on June 25 in Barbados.

Marnus Labuschagne is dropped for the first time since 2019 in Test cricket, as Australia gives Sam Konstas his third cap to open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja in the first Test. Meanwhile, Steve Smith has been ruled out of the opening match due to a finger injury and will be replaced by Josh Inglis.

Bailey Confirms Labuschagne Drop, Emphasizes Long-Term Support

Chief Selector George Bailey confirmed the changes on Thursday and highlighted that Marnus needs to improve in certain areas, and Australia will work closely with him to help refine his game.

"Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team," Chair of Selectors George Bailey said. "He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects. We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover. We continue to value his skill and expect him to work through the challenge positively."

Bailey: Smith Needs More Time, Could Return Later in Series

Bailey also confirmed that Steve Smith’s recovery is taking longer than hoped. He’s not yet fully fit to bat due to the finger injury he suffered during the WTC Final 2025. Notably, Smith avoided surgery in hopes of playing the West Indies tour with stitches, but Bailey stated the injury still needs more time to heal. He remains hopeful Smith could feature in the last two Tests.

"Steve needs more time for the wound to heal so we'll give him another week's rest and assess his functionality after that," Bailey said. "We have decided to allow Josh and Sam to replace Steve and Marnus. We are excited to see them get the chance to further their fledgling Test careers."

Konstas, Inglis Get Second Chance to Shine

Sam Konstas, who previously featured in two Tests against India during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, gets another opportunity to open alongside Usman Khawaja in the first Test against West Indies. Josh Inglis, who impressed in the Sri Lanka series, will also get his chance, with Bailey praising his performances and expecting him to continue that form in the Caribbean.

"In his only opportunity in Test cricket to date, Josh was outstanding in Sri Lanka, showing great intent and ability to put pressure on the opposition."

Currently, Australia has announced only the key changes in its batting order. The full playing XI is expected to be revealed closer to match time, depending on conditions—particularly whether they opt for two spinners or go with four pacers.
