Rohit Gurunath Sharma was born on 30th April 1987 in Bansod, Nagpur, Maharashtra to Gurunath Sharma and Purnima Sharma. He has a younger sibling named Vishal Sharma. He was raised by his grandparents in Borivali because of his father’s financial difficulties. He would only visit his parents during the weekends in Dombivli.

Beginning of Rohit Sharmaʼs Cricket Career

Sharma’s List A debut was against Central Zone while playing for West Zone in the Deodar Trophy in Gwalior in 2005. In the same tournament, he scored 142 off 123 balls against North Zone which caught the attention of the selectors. He debuted for India A against New Zealand A in July 2006, which was his entry into first-class cricket for India A. He also made his Ranji Trophy debut in 2006-07 for Mumbai and won the competition in his maiden tournament.

Rohit made his ODI debut on June 23, 2007 for the national team against Ireland in Belfast - a match which India won. Following that, he was given the chance to make his T20I debut on September 19, 2007 against England in Durban in the ICC T20 World Cup - a competition in which India emerged victorious. He made his test debut a while later on November 6, 2013 against West Indies in Eden Gardens where he smashed a 177, which is the second-highest debut score by an Indian.

Appointment as Captain

Sharma was appointed as the captain of the T20I national team when then-captain Virat Kohli was rested against Sri Lanka in 2017. He later assumed full captaincy of the team from November 2021 after Kohli stepped down. He took over from Kohli in December 2021 as the ODI captain as well. And finally, he was also handed the Test captaincy from Kohli in March 2022. He won the title again against CSK in 2015, against Rising Pune Supergiants in 2017, before beating CSK again in 2019. He won MI’s last title (as of now) against Delhi Capitals in 2020. He has won the joint-most IPL trophies as a captain, equalling MS Dhoni and is one of the most successful in the competition’s history.
