The 2nd Test between India and the West Indies got underway at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, with Shubman Gill winning the toss and opting to bat first on what looked like a batting-friendly surface. The West Indies, who also wanted to bat first, had a poor start with the ball; their line and length failed to trouble the Indian openers.
Sunil Gavaskar caught Ian Bishop Off guard
Despite the surface being good for batting, Day 1 was expected to offer some hard bounce to test the batters. However, the West Indies pacers surprisingly avoided using the bouncer early on, especially in the first six overs with the new ball. Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar pointed this out on-air, directing a sharp question to Ian Bishop:
"It's been six overs with the new ball and not a single bouncer from the West Indies pacers. What is happening, Ian? What happened to the West Indies pace attack?"
Caught off guard, Bishop was momentarily speechless before Harsha Bhogle stepped in with a light jab:
"He's in the commentary box, it's a bit tough to bowl a bouncer from here," he said with a smile.
Bishop finally responded:
"I'm sure we will see one from the likes of Seales."
Jaiswal Leads the Charge for India
Meanwhile, out in the middle, Jaiswal and KL Rahul began cautiously, taking India to 15/0 in the first six overs, as Seales and Philip got a bit of early swing.
Rahul then opened up with a clean punch and whipped off Seales for back-to-back boundaries. Jaiswal followed it up by whipping Greaves, making it three in a row.
Jaiswal was oozing confidence, a bullet-like straight drive off Philip, and another off Greaves, both timed to perfection.
The pair brought up a solid fifty-run partnership before Rahul, having just lofted Khary Pierre for six, danced down to Jomel Warrican again, only to be stumped for 38 after a sharp turn beat his edge.
Jaiswal kept the scoreboard ticking, cutting Warrican and then lofting and sweeping Roston Chase for more boundaries. At No. 3, Sai Sudharsan, under scrutiny, began steadily with confident flicks and punches, maintaining India's momentum.
